Pretendian
The false appropriation of Indigenous identity (or other oppressed status) in a criminal context. These offenders steal valor, dignity, fame, and benefits from the more deserving underprivileged. Examples include:
- claiming to be non-white to get professorships, chairpersonships, or scholarships
- shifting racial or ethnic status when it is convenient
- speaking like they are members of a cultural subgroup when advantageous
- pretending to be different genders for notoriety and sponsorship money
- "remembering" acts of heroism and participation in activities that put them in a good light
